Portland Rescue Mission

Department: New Life Ministry

Employment Status: Part Time, Regular, Non-exempt

Typical Hours Required: 1 - 2 days per week as deemed necessary

Pay Range: Hourly rate depending on experience

General Description of Work

This position seeks to support Portland Rescue Mission as a whole in the strategy, design and implementation of health care plans for residents and guests of Shepherd’s Door, The Harbor and Burnside locations.   

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for overall health awareness including nutrition, exercise, and medical and dental exams.
  • Responsible for developing and presenting life skill classes that address nutrition, diet, child health issues, pregnancies/baby plans and other subjects, as appropriate.
  • Responsible for blending health care into the overall program for New Life residents and preparing program participants to continue making wise health care decisions after graduation from the program.
  • Develop and maintain records to assist in the assessment of progress for each resident.
  • Maintain awareness of potential community healthcare threats that could impact residents, guests and/or staff.
  • Maintain Walla Walla University partnership; supporting the placement of nursing students at both Shepherd’s Door and The Harbor and providing supervision of those students throughout the internship.

General Functions

  • Develop relationships and collaborate with existing medical agencies to identify resources and existing state programs that could benefit our program participants.
  • Identify and develop professional relationships with volunteer physicians and nurse interns to assist where needed to provide for the care of the residents and their children.
  • Create and maintain the Health Room, including all furnishings, equipment, tools and supplies.
  • Assist and encourage program participants in accepting personal responsibility regarding doctor appointments for themselves and their children.
  • Attend all trainings and other meetings required for staff to maintain program excellence.
  • Review medical documents, as needed, to provide needed clarification.

Other Duties as Assigned

In this and any position with Portland Rescue Mission, it is impossible to predict the many requests and assignments that can and will be made on an employee.  Flexibility and a cooperate spirit are crucial characteristics of the person who holds this important position and for the successful operation of Portland Rescue Mission services.

Additional Duties

  • Develop and maintain records to assist in the assessment of progress for each resident.
  • Provide case notes addressing health issues resolved, children assisted, residents assisted, volunteer hours, involvement with other agencies and program components evaluated.
  • Attend all trainings and other meetings required for staff to maintain program excellence.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Oregon Licensed Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Some knowledge in the following areas helpful but not required:
    • Grief training
    • Psychiatric training
    • AIDs training
    • Nutrition
  • General awareness and basic knowledge of chemical dependency and addiction recovery 
  • Experience in Microsoft Windows software and Mac operating systems
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Self starter
  • Prompt and thorough in job performance
  • Creative and logical problem solving
  • Demonstrated ability to be a team player
