THE POSITION 

The Volunteer Ministry Coordinator will ensure that the compassionate care and discipleship provided to individuals suffering from homelessness, hunger and/or addiction is enhanced and expanded through the mobilization of churches, individuals, and groups into significant volunteer ministry at Portland Rescues Mission. The Volunteer Ministry Coordinator will oversee individual and group volunteer service at The Harbor, Shepherd's Door, and Administration.

  • Pay Range: $43,000-$50,000
  • Reports To: Director of Advancement
  • Hours: Primarily Monday-Friday days, evenings and weekends as needed

THE VOLUNTEER MINISTRY TEAM

The Volunteer Ministry team inspires, mobilizes and equips individuals and groups from Christian churches, organizations and the local community for significant ministry to men, women and children suffering from homelessness, hunger or addiction, resulting in hope and life transformation in Christ.

THE ESSENTIALS

  • Portland Rescue Mission’s service to individuals suffering from homelessness and/or addiction will be enhanced and enriched through inspiring, mobilizing, and equipping churches, individuals and group volunteers into significant ministry
  • Oversee all volunteer service activities at The Harbor, Shepherd's Door, and Administration so that the ministry to program participants and the community is enhanced through volunteerism
  • Guide, support, and collaborate with staff around volunteer roles, needs and development, ensuring volunteers are properly equipped, cared for, and integrated by their Volunteer Supervisor
  • Ensure that volunteers and volunteer groups experience ongoing support as they serve through communication, updates, appreciation, and training so that their involvement and satisfaction deepens over the length of their service
  • Work with the volunteer team to lead volunteer appreciation events and other trainings and activities 
  • Oversee occasional group service projects allowing groups to experience service at Portland Rescue Mission with the goal of increasing involvement
  • Share the Gospel and provide spiritual care when opportunities are made available with the various guests, program participants, volunteers, interns, and partners Portland Rescue Mission serves and serves alongside
  • Discern the faith background of the various volunteers and groups that seek to serve with PRM and appropriately match them to the various service roles, paying special attention to volunteer roles that require Christian maturity so that the discipleship of program participants is enhanced.
  • Support volunteer recruitment by adversing Portland Rescue Mission to churches and groups (e.g. volunteer fairs, tables, worship services, trainings) and clearly articulate what PRM does and how volunteerism is vital to PRM's mission and goals 
  • Support PRM's Church Partnership goals to invite and equip Churches to serve through volunteerism, donations, and client referrals

KEY OUTCOMES

  • Increase annual volunteer engagement 10% (1,600 current volunteers) by developing and executing strategic recruitment, onboarding, and church partnership initiatives that expand the volunteer pipeline
  • Achieve high volunteer satisfaction and retention by creating a consistent, meaningful volunteer experience—measured through feedback, repeat service rates, and long-term engagement
  • Build a sustainable volunteer community by implementing systems for communication, recognition, and leadership development that encourage volunteers to serve regularly and grow in commitment over time

BACKGROUND AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • A passionate relationship with Jesus Christ and a testimony of continued growth in faith

  • A calling to serve and mobilize people to serve men, women and children impacted by homelessness and addiction
  • Agreement with Portland Rescue Mission’s Statement of Faith and Code of Ethics  
  • Passionate and skilled in discernment to appropriately place volunteers in service roles 
  • College degree in related field or experience equivalent
  • Experience serving in ministry and basic understanding of church ministry
  • Proficient in communication, documentation, organization, scheduling and individual and group training/education
  • Perform routine physical tasks including prolonged sitting and standing, frequent use of hands for typing and phone handling, and ability to lift at least 50 lbs. unassisted
