THE PLACE

The Burnside Shelter of Portland Rescue Mission hosts our 24-hour ministry 365 days of the year to individuals experiencing homelessness in downtown Portland. Our Burnside Shelter is home to a broad spectrum of comprehensive emergency services, from immediate care (meals, restrooms, mail service, showers, clothing, etc.) to transitional shelter programming for men, all provided by a diverse and skilled team focused on providing compassionate care and building relationships that serve to support growth away from the street environment.

THE POSITION

The Mobile Outreach and Guest Care Specialist will have the opportunity to give hope and restore life through serving the guests (people impacted by homelessness) who either visit the Burnside Shelter or are located throughout the city in the various camps or on the street. This person will support the ministry of the Guest Relations Office at the Burnside Shelter, and the mobile outreach ministry, visiting people in need of connection and hope. In both areas of ministry, this person will equip and leverage volunteers to best serve the thousands of people impacted by homelessness in the city of Portland. 

This person will have a highly relational approach to ministry and an ability to winsomely share Christ whenever possible with people who are in difficult situations. A heart for compassionate service, a hope-filled demeanor, and an ability to discern needs are a must.

THE ESSENTIALS

  • Guests who arrive at the Burnside Shelter will be welcomed into a dynamic environment of Christian hospitality, served by competent staff and volunteers, and provided with compassionate and highly relational care so that they may take steps towards receiving hope and life restoration.
  • The Mobile Guest Care Ministry will be actively in relationship with local churches and the public, available to respond to needs around the city.
  • Volunteers serving in the Guest Relations Office and Mobile Guest Care Ministry will feel welcomed, supported, encouraged, and equipped in their ministry to our guests and participants through meaningful relationships with staff, appropriate training and professional interactions with the team
  • Individual men and women will transition away from the street environment and towards community by the opportunities presented in both the work of the Guest Relations Office and Mobile Guest Care Ministries.
  • Share the Gospel in ministry opportunities to guests and program participants, and develop additional program possibilities to further this ministry work.
  • Guests and Connect program participants will receive care that reflects their value through best practices in ministry and effective operational procedures that are clearly communicated and in compliance with PRM policies
  • Document significant interactions with guests in a computer database and proactively communicate with the team via email.
  • Serve as part of the guest services team in providing coverage of the daily operations of the Burnside facility as needed.
  • Oversee staff coverage schedules, including coordinating daily coverage and vacations related to Mobile Guest Care needs

BACKGROUND AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated ability and experience in outreach ministry, including leadership over others in a management or mentorship capability
  • Knowledge of and experience working with individuals in and around the homeless community, with challenges like those around addiction, mental health, and housing needs
  • Competency and comfortability in using support software such as client databases, Excel, Outlook, and other office tools
  • College degree in related field or experience equivalent
  • A passionate relationship with Jesus Christ as Savior and a testimony of continued growth in faith
  • A calling to serve God in the ministry to men and women experiencing homelessness and addiction
  • Actively participate in a church community, manifesting spiritual growth and spiritual maturity as defined by traditional Biblical Standards
  • Adheres to Portland Rescue Mission's Statement of Faith and Code of Ethics
  • A personal ethos and work ethic that reflects Portland Rescue Mission’s ministry culture – Highly Relational, Christ-Centered, Joyful Servant
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs. unassisted
